Important Open Enrollment Due Dates for the 2025-2026 School Year

• March 1, 2025: If your student will be going into 1st grade – 12th grade for the 2025-26 school year, Urbandale Community School District must receive your Open Enrollment Application by March 1, 2025. Per Iowa law, any applications received after this date will be denied unless good cause is demonstrated.
• September 1, 2025: If your student will be going into kindergarten for the 2025-26 school year, Urbandale Community School District must receive your Open Enrollment Application by September 1, 2025. Per Iowa law, any applications received after this date will be denied unless good cause is demonstrated.

Please note: You may request an attendance center, and we will attempt to grant your request, but the district has discretion to determine which attendance center an open enrolled student will attend.

Welcome to Urbandale Schools

Located in the heart of the metro, Urbandale is a big-time school district with a small-town feel. Our average graduating class size is 325 students providing many opportunities for students to get involved, stay connected, and feel a true sense of belonging.

The Urbandale Community School District is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and an alternative high school program. We offer a comprehensive Preschool Program and Adventuretime Before/After School Childcare Program. Families describe their experience in the Urbandale Community School District as welcoming, encouraging, caring, and supportive. Students develop lifelong learning skills while building lifelong friendships.

Additionally, any family can choose to attend Karen Acres Elementary which operates on a year-round schedule. At Karen Acres, students are in session the same number of days as other elementary schools, but breaks occur more frequently to give everyone a chance to reset and refresh. Open Enrollment Due Dates

Open Enrollment is the process by which a parent or guardian residing in an Iowa district may enroll their child(ren) into another Iowa school district under the terms and conditions of Iowa Code 282.18 and Iowa Administrative Code 281-17 as amended by Senate File 2435, Division VIII. Senate File 2435, Division VIII reinstates open enrollment deadlines for all applicants effective July 1, 2024.

Per Iowa law, any applications received after this date will be denied unless good cause is demonstrated.
• September 1, 2026: If your student will be going into kindergarten for the 2026-27 school year, Urbandale Community School District must receive your Open Enrollment Application by September 1, 2026. Per Iowa law, any applications received after this date will be denied unless good cause is demonstrated.

Please note: If your child is currently open enrolled into the Urbandale Community School District and would like to continue attending next year, you do not need to submit a new application. Once you have been approved for open enrollment, the approval continues until your child graduates or you notify the district you are ending your open enrollment and enrolling your child in a different school district. (Note: While you do not need to submit a new open enrollment application, you do need to complete online student registration for the upcoming school year.)
