Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal law that ensures students with disabilities are not subjected to discrimination in schools. It requires schools to provide the necessary support and services to students whose disabilities significantly impact major life activities. All accredited schools in Iowa are required to follow these guidelines. Section 504 covers a broad range of educational settings, including preschool, K–12, adult education, and private institutions.
A 504 plan is a written plan describing the necessary support and services that the student needs. If you believe your child may benefit from a 504 Plan, please reach out to the building administrator to discuss next steps. The Administrator will coordinate a meeting with parents and a team of professionals who are familiar with your child’s needs to review data to determine whether a 504 Plan is appropriate.
